The provinces of Kivu, situated in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, are characterised by their beauty and their abundance of natural resources. The Virunga game park, just sixty kilometres away from Goma, features lions, leopards, hippos, elephants, mountain gorillas etc..as well as great fishing spots for tilapia and cat fish.
Kivu has another well known game parks, the Kahuzi Biega national park near Bukavu which is home to Gorillas.
These parks are protected by Unesco and the adjascent primary forest is often refered to as the "second lung of the planet" after the Amazon forest.
Lake Kivu which separates (by 100 kilometres) Goma and Bukavu, the capitals of North and South Kivu respectively, has an important methane gas reserve which is soon to be tapped.
Other major resources of the Kivus are tin concentrate, coffee, tea, quinquina and wood, all of which are transported for export to the port of Mombasa by TMK.
